Basemark X, a benchmark that puts a strain on any smartphone or tablet

We testatto different iOS and Android devices with the new version 1.0
of Basemark X.

Basemark X, became available in version 1.0 on 9 April, is a benchmark that has gained the limelight because very demanding. Any smartphone or tablet, in fact, is struggling to overcome the 10 fps in this test, because of the use of advanced rendering techniques, which are usually used only on the PC more efficient.

This tool has been designed to compare devices based on different operating systems, such as iOS, Android and Windows Phone. According to the software company who made it, Rightware,Basemark X has been reviewed by leading mobile device manufacturers of the world.

The workload for the GPU were designed to be similar to those required by the three-dimensional games of today and of the future, thus using all the processing power of the devices. The result is that the latter are subjected to an impressive effort, much greater than the previous benchmark OpenGL ES 2.0.

The images of X Basemark therefore include some graphics in video games are usually more complex, such as the massive presence of particle effects, effects of light quality and advanced post-processing. This makes X Basemark a professional point of reference, because it is the only benchmarking tool for smartphones and tablets built on a real graphics engine, which is used in real games, namely Unity 4.

The benchmark provides two distinct scores that are determined in response to a series of tests that are performed at two different resolutions. The first score, which is marked with the words On-screen, is determined while the images are rendered at the native resolution of the device, and therefore should not be to grasp the full potential of the GPU.

The second score, Off-screen, is developed on the basis of tests carried out at a standard resolution of 720p. It is used to measure the raw performance of the device, regardless of its native resolution. Clearly the score On-screen one most important for gamers, because it returns a measure that binds directly to that which is actually the actual gaming experience.

Benchmark Result On-Screen
(Native resolution)
Result Benchmark Off-Screen
(1280x720 pixels)
Samsung Galaxy S 4
9,247
8,760
HTC One

HTC One X +
7,170

Sony Xperia Z

Google Nexus 4

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Apple iPhone 5
12,510
7,360
Apple iPad 4
9,588
11,301
Apple iPad 3
5,741
6,940
The tests we performed we can see that Google Nexus Apple iPhone 4 and 5 are the best solutions to play, because they have native resolutions lower than for other devices (respectively of 1280 × 768 and 1136x640). Having a resolution is not too high on this type of devices corresponds to a choice devoted to gaming by the manufacturer, because you'll have images of fluid and widely enjoyable game. The resolutions of some devices, such as Apple iPad 4, do not allow developers to optimize games, resulting in loss of performance, as is evidenced by the benchmark by Rightware.

In terms of performance, as well, however, we note that the top position is confined Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One or the terminals with the latest hardware on the market today, or in the process of making their entry into the market.

RightWave Basemark X is currently available on Google Play Store and App Store .
